“Drawing shows the Pioneer-Venus Multiprobe Spacecraft being built for intensive study of the Venus atmosphere beginning in 1978. The Pioneer-Venus program, which will be carried out by two separately launched spacecraft – a bus carrying four atmosphere probes (shown above) and an orbiter – is managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center, Mountain View, California. Spacecraft are built by Hughes Aircraft Company. The multiprobe vehicle will carry one large atmospheric probe and three identical small probes. The large probe will descend through the Venus atmosphere by parachute to an altitude of about 44 kilometers where it will jettison the parachute and free-fall to the planet’s surface. The smaller probes, each carrying five pounds of instrumentation, will be targeted to sample the Venus weather at locations 5,000 miles apart. Their mission ends when they land on the surface, about one hour after entry.

Purpose of the Pioneer-Venus program is to understand Venus weather. Weather scientists say this will provide important insight into the Earth’s weather.”
