Solid ivory. Mounted on wooden socle base.
May have once been part of a very rare set of the Twelve Apostles. The twelve have now been separated but six of the original dozen have come up for sale in the auctions rooms of Bonham's in London. See the pics below.
Condition is fair and consistent with age. With old cracks, damages and repair. The ivory has yellowed in places with dust and dirt on cracks and crevices. The whole is mounted on an associated wooden, socle base. Base exhibiting chip and losses to both paint and gesso layer. Certain areas of the base may have been reshaded or repainted at some time.
The halos are possibly of a later date. Halo showing significant damage and loss. One-third of St. Peter's halo is lacking with one spoke missing. Halo also lacks original peg to mount them on the saint's head. Halo now secured with a wooden splints. There is crazing and cracking to St. Peter's shoulder with his key later re-glued.
On wooden, socle base that exhibit significant wear and tear. Paint peeling to the gesso later. Evidence of over-painting and reshading.
