The Andelson Collection: Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception / Purisima Concepcion

18th Century

FILIPINO. Tabaco, Albay Province.

Hardwood with traces of polychromy and gesso.

A very typical image of a Philippine version of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin is shown as a young woman with parted hair at the top and the rest of her tresses cascading down her back. Her hand would have been folded in an attitude of prayer now missing. She is dressed in flowing robes with the mantle crossing her torso diagonally from left to right and tucked under the right hand. Her inner robe is cinched with a belt tied into a knot. This treatment is typical of images made in the 18th century.

The Virgin stands on a bank of ensaymada (or brioche) cloud base. Head of cherubin on front of the cloud base. Untypically, there are no holes for horns of crescent moon. Back is flat. Condition is good for its age. Lacking hands. Large vertical crack through the center of the figure,. Traces of paint and gesso still extant.

Height: 14 in or 35 cm.

Provenance:

Current whereabouts Unknown.

Sold at the Andelson Sale, Metropolitan Galleries of Shaker Heights, OH. March 30, 2003.
