Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Review!
Ever since I discovered the character, I've always wanted a Miles Morales Spider-Man movie. I like him just a tad bit more than Peter Parker for various reasons, but I think the reason why I love him the most is that he is the living embodiment of the notion that anybody can be Spider-Man, which is awesome. So when I heard that this animated film was going to be about Miles, I was ecstatic! But then I heard it was going to be a Spider-Verse movie, and I was a bit more hesitant. I was never too much of a fan of the larger inter-dimensional Spider-Man events in the comics, and I didn't want anyone to distract the film from Miles's story. But once I saw the trailer, all my faith was restored by the animation alone. Anyways, my history of anticipation this film may be rocky, but I finally had the chance to experience it in a Dolby theater which was neat (thanks AMC A-List!), so here are my thoughts on the newest Spider story!
Good: The first thing I said when I walked out of the theater is that it’s films like Into the Spider-Verse that show that why animation is so important and great. Stylistically, this may be the greatest animated film of all time. I was obsessed with the animation from the trailers, and what was in there was only the tip of the iceberg. I feel like there are some films where I’ve said “this is the closest I’ll get to feeling like I’m reading a comic,” well FORGET those movies, because THIS is the only film where anyone can literally say that. The way the directors were able to implement the comic panel style into this film was inspiring, it made me question why any comicbook film is made in live action anymore. But then I realised that live action comicbook movies are awesome and should be made, but still, that’s the kind of effect the animation had on me in this film. In terms of the film’s story, it had everything necessary to call this film a Miles Morales film, which I appreciated so much. The relationship he had with his parents was so great, especially with his father. But I also loved the little touches of him speaking spanish to his mother, I’m glad they got down his exact ethnicity perfectly. Having the story surround a young Spider-Man learn from an older and more depressed Spider-Man was also very clever, it lead to some great interactions between Miles and the Peter Parker from another earth, as well as some really touching moments between the two. As for the rest of the Spider-folk, I couldn’t get enough of them! Each Spider character brought their own flavor to the story, both visually and through their performance. My favorite probably had to be Nicholas Cage as Spider-Man noir, I’d love to see more of him in the future! Now I don’t want this review to go forever, so lastly I’ll say that I loved the soundtrack, it was big and beautiful mix of a classic score that would be expected in a Spider-Man movie along with hip-hop and some jazz, I can’t wait to download this soundtrack and listen to it when I re-read my Miles Morales comics!
Bad: Now having this film be a perfect adaptation of a comicbook doesn’t mean it’s a perfect film whatsoever, even though it’s pretty close to being one. The film still suffers that many comics of this type suffer from all the time. The biggest glaring flaw is that there were just too many plot conveniences. One or two is usually fine with me, but I felt like I was wondering to myself multiple times during the film how that person got somewhere or how convenient one thing worked out. Lastly, I just wish we got more from the other Spider-people from the other dimensions. As I said earlier, I loved each and every one of them and I wish I could just spend more time with them. Now that’s like all I’ve got for negatives right now. Like I said, this film is near perfect.
Overall, it’s clear that Into the Spider-Verse is certainly one of the best Spider-Man movies yet! It’s so close with Homecoming, I’m going to be flip flopping on which I like more, but for now I still think Homecoming is better. That being said, Into the Spider-verse is Absolutely the greatest animated film to have come out in the last couple of years, maybe since the Lego Movie or Wreck-It Ralph! I really hope everyone goes out to see this film, and if it doesn’t win that Academy Award, I’m going to be seriously pissed. No animated film comes even close to the genius that is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Overall, I’m going to give this film a 9.5/10. If you’ve seen Into the Spider-Verse, let me know your thoughts on the film in the comments below!
This weekend going to be quite awesome when it comes to superhero movie reviews. I’ll be putting out a Once Upon a Deadpool review tomorrow and then I’m seeing Aquaman on Saturday so look out for a review for that one too!
