Solo: A Star Wars Story Review!
Another year, another Star Wars film. I think it’s fair to say that Solo: A Star Wars Story was probably my least anticipated Star Wars movie of all time ever since I was slightly burned by what went down in The Last Jedi. Not to mention that nobody ever asked for a Han Solo origin story. Anyways, I went to go check out this movie on a Friday night and to my surprise, the theater was practically empty! The theater for when I saw Infinity War for a 4th time in the middle of the day last Wednesday was more packed than when I saw Solo on a FRIDAY NIGHT. So does my theater’s attendance reflect the film’s quality? Let’s check it out.
Good: I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think my favorite part of this film was Han Solo himself. Everyone was eager to see if Alden Ehrenreich could capture the character of Han Solo as well as Harrison Ford in the past, and I gotta say, I never once thought about Harrison Ford when watching this film. Ehrenreich to me felt like a young Han Solo and he never felt like he was just doing an impersonation of the character. The scenes where I think he embodied the character the best were his interaction with Chewbacca, who I think was my second favorite aspect of the film. They had the perfect chemistry and the development of their relationship from when they first met to the end of the film felt natural and full of so much energy. The next thing that I enjoyed about this film, is that it was overall such a fun STAR WARS movie. Unlike the Last Jedi, where most of the time it felt like it was trying to be a more thought provoking film than a good Star Wars movie, Solo knew that the best it could be was just a fun Star Wars movie, so they just rolled with it. I’d say this film out of all the new Star Wars films felt the most like the original films in terms of tone. One character who helped embody that tone was Donald Glover’s Lando, who I thought was incredible. Everyone was expecting him to be great, but it was still surprising become a young Billy D. Williams so flawlessly! My favorite sequence in this film was probably when Han and Lando are playing that card game for the first time. That’s where I believe the film reached its maximum potential in what a young Han Solo movie could be. Now I’m going to speak about the various reveals that were in Solo a little later in the review, but I wanted to mention that there was one sequence of the film that explained a famous part of Solo’s backstory that I thought was pretty good and worth the explanation. There’s also a few cool easter eggs as well as a mind blowing cameo in the film. It’s too bad that literally as I was walking into the theater, two little kids spoiled that cameo for me and I wanted to die, but I thought it was still pretty awesome when I saw it for the first time.
Bad: Now the biggest fear that I had going into Solo is that the film would reveal some stuff about Han Solo that nobody ever wanted or needed to know, and sadly my fear became true. Now I wouldn’t have been as offended by these reveals if they weren’t revealed in the most stupidly way possible. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the biggest ones was towards the beginning and once it was revealed I died inside a little, I was assisting how anyone thought that making that an actual reveal about Han Solo was a good idea to put into the film. Then, while at times this film is booming with energy, there are long sequences of the film where it just feels completely empty and lifeless. These moments made this 2 hour film feel like 4. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so awkwardly bored in a film from one of my favorite film franchises like in this film.
Overall, Solo: A Star Wars Story surely is a mixed bag for me, but the things I found good outweighed the bad enough for me to come out of the film enjoying it. This may be my least favorite of the new Star Wars films, but maybe I will get over certain things as the film ages and I’ll learn to appreciate it more. But in the end, I went into this film seeing if I could believe in somebody else act as Han Solo and watch him go on an adventure with Chewbacca and that’s sorta what I got, so consider me satisfied a bit. For these reasons, I’m going to give Solo: A Star Wars Story a 7/10. If you guys have seen Solo, let me know what you thought about it in the comments below!
