North Beach Doesn't Sleep

And neither do I.

Okay, well the second part of that statement is entirely false; I'm actually pretty tired as it is.

My original intention was to head out to Pier 14 to take some picture along the Embarcadero. It was a nice day today after all. A little more chilly than I would like, but you beggars can't be choosers :)

On the way to the pier, I drove through North Beach, and decided to stick around here. I just remembered about the Giants baseball game this evening, and I did not want to be anywhere near the stadium because of the likely increased traffic.

As I walked across Columbus Street to get to one of my favorite bakeries, I looked in both directions constantly to make sure cars saw me. It was getting dark, and I was wearing somewhat darker colors. Better safe than sorry! When I looked to my left I made eye contact with the driver of a car that yielded to me. Then my eyes drifted up for a fraction of a second, and I saw the Transamerican pyramid. I knew I needed a picture of that. Soon as I finished crossing the street, I waited for the stoplight again, and I crossed back where I can from and hunkered down on the concrete island. The island was barely wider than I was.

As I sat crouched on one knee on the island in the middle of the street, all I heard was the rush of cars woosh-ing past me. Cars going straight, cars making a right, cars making a left. What really made me look twice were the buses. I don't want to get hit by a bus, haha! Some vehicles came within a foot or two of the island I was on.

There were small periods of time when traffic came to a standstill -pedestrian crossing time. Instead of cars rushing by, I heard people cheering. Many restaurants and bars were playing the Giants came on television. I guess I couldn't get away from the game after all. Bottom of the third inning, 4-0 Giants. Pretty cool. The people viewing the game thought so too, judging by the loud cheering I heard everywhere around me. Many folks walking around were sporting the orange and black clad look. It really is a state of mind, isn't it?

Happy Friday!
