Day 340: Squat toilets
I'll have you know that these squat toilets are interesting.
But here's another classic Ansy-Moment-Story for all you lot to read about!! Haha.
I was at a medical check up [a requirement for the process of getting a more permanent working visa in this country, and a general need in general] last Thursday.
So off we went to the hospital for the checkup, Elizabeth had warned me that I needed to give a urine sample. So they gave me a cup [which is GREAT because back at home in the UK, they'd just give you that test tube thing! And you have to somehow pee into it! haha] but here they gave me a cup which was wonderful and came in handy. So off I scuttled in true-Ansy-like to the ladies.
I open the door to reveal my worst nightmare: the squat toilets!
[since arriving I have done anything I can to avoid having to confront these types of toilets! I peed in one for the first time in my LIFE the day after my arrival. Shocker... let's just say it was messy!]
So I look at the other cubicles. They were ALL squat toilets. No western traditional types. So I look for the cleanest one. But the majority of them were clean [duh, what with being in a hospital and all!]
So I do my business [was dying for a wee and was waiting for an hour because I knew I had to give a urine sample and didn't know when the desire to "micturate" would arrive again!]
So I tried to pee into the cup, it was ok. But I was peeing far too much urine, so much so the whole cup got full [your average sized paper cup!] and put it aside and peed some more into the squat urinal.
All was fine. I stood up, zipped up, urine sample in cup in one hand, bag in the other.
And I naturally rise one foot over the toilet. but OH NO!
My birkenstock shoe/sandal/flip flop thing falls INTO the urinal! OH NO!
It didn't fall into the flat area [which would have been fine because it's not deep in water... just a little of my urine... haha yucks]
But it fell into the MAIN drain part [the hole!] and the whole thing becomes immersed in toilet water [and maybe some urine!]
pretty much baptised in the toilet! Oh no!
So there I am, looking down, in horror, and the true typical Ansy-Moment... one urine sample cup in hand, one bag in the other, keeping my balance, with one foot shoe-less.... so I hopped out... while trying not to spill the cup of urine down my front...

So I place my cup sample and bag by the sink area. and hop BACK up to the squat toilet to FISH my shoe back up... haha... funny funny...
Don't worry, I washed, rinsed, disinfected it, rinsed, disinfected it, and washed and rinsed it again and again shortly after.
But I left the ladies bathroom with one dry shoe, and one wet. Yucks.
Sigh. Squat toilets are such a challenge.
Oh but ready, I've kinda perfected the art now...! Mainly because I've peed into a squat toilet more now (what with it being the only form of relief at the school I work now... Hurray for a job! Boo for the toilets! but no matter!]
The trick is to WATCH were you aim [otherwise you end up peeing down your leg!]
And the other trick is to fold up your trousers [or pants as some call it] to avoid getting the foot of your pants wet with yucky stuff. Also allows for easier viewing as to where you aim. Haha.
Oh and to clear your pockets [I have a tendency to put my mobile/cell phone in my trouser/pant pockets... Not good when squatting and peeing at same time!]
So I've perfected the art of peeing into squat toilets.
So much so I ate something bad on Friday and pooed in one for the very first time [I was at school, and was desperate!] But still... It's not that bad [apart from the smell in the school toilets!]
ps. The urine sample was just for a stupid pregnancy test. I tested negative. Phew.
