Day 172: Twelve inch nails

Did you know that when the Romans attached Jesus to a cross, the nails were hammered into both feet, a nail hammered on each wrist. Three nails were used to support the weight of Jesus' body.

A lot of classic paintings (which don't get me wrong, I love their visual stimulations) depict the scene incorrectly.

If the nails were actually hammered into the palm of Jesus' hands, Jesus would not be able to stay on the cross because of the bones in the hands. The weight of the body would inevitably rip up his hand because the way our hands are made, the bones that make up our palm are connected to each finger.

There is only flesh and cartilage in between the bones of the palm, hence if you think about it, to dig a nail into the center of the palm would mean Jesus wouldn't be able to support his own weight, not with nails on both palms: his body would flop forward.

Alas, the truth is, if you think about it, the Romans hammered the nails in Jesus' wrists. There are more bones in the wrist area, as this is a joint, thus this means more support for the body weight when being hung up on the cross.

There we go. Learn something new everyday. Learnt about this on Good Friday, the day Jesus died for all our sins.
