sixteen things
I had hoped to avoid this, but I've been tagged by vespertine (whose photographs are marvelous and you should really go see them after you read this bit of chatter about me) so here it goes...
1. I am male, 6'-2", 190 lbs. and 40 years old.
2. My left hand is made of bokeh.
3. I was born in El Paso, Texas and grew up in the Washington DC suburbs just outside of Southeast DC. Consider this my shout out to anyone from Temple Hills, Maryland.
4. I am madly, insanely, and crazily in love with my wife.
5. My ancestors include a cartographer, a southern interior decorator, a master carpenter, and probably more than a few vikings.
6. I have a love/hate relationship with sleep. I enjoy it immensely but I am a busybody and it takes conscious effort for me to wind down. Once when I was five or six, and I couldn't sleep, my father gave me a box of crayons and a stack of paper and told me to draw what I was thinking about. Out poured cars and spaceships and buildings and imaginary worlds and it hasn't stopped since then.
7. I am a designer by profession. It probably has something to do with No.6. I spent years in and out of college trying fine art, music, and photography before pursuing degrees in interior design and graphic design. Most of my work is "environmental graphic design", environmental in the sense that it is for built environments. I design wayfinding sign systems, custom art and exhibit installations, and brand/identity.
8. I am a runner. I hated running most of my life until I gave it a real try six years or so ago, now I love it. I used to be a swimmer, and then I was all about cycling, and then mountain biking for a few years. But after back surgery I don't mountain bike anymore.
9. I always preferred cats over dogs but my miniature schnauzer and I are tight. His no holds barred, in your face, I'll lick anything once attitude is a constant source of inspiration.
10. I prefer red wine, Belgian beer, and dirty martinis.
11. I like to make up new words and nicknames, and I can amuse myself for hours by making nonsense sounds (one of the best ones is still the "martian space lander" sound, which a friend of mine made up when we were only 6 years old).
12. I have the collector gene. When I was a kid it was comic books. More recently it has been design books and vintage fountain pens, currently it is camera gear.
13. I think cheese is a food group.
14. After almost 20 years living in Richmond I think I finally consider myself a southerner. I think it helps that my Grandmother is from North Carolina.
15. I have learned so much from the so many talented photographers here on flickr and I can't thank you all enough. I can't even begin to name all the names, but if you should look through the photographs of my contacts and in my favorites I don't know how on earth you couldn't walk away inspired.
16. I am so grateful for all the wonder and excitement and beauty and joy God sends my way every day.
I reserve the right to break the chain by not tagging anyone else, but I haven't made up my mind yet.
