Dritvík_9503

Dritvík was one of the largest fishing station in Iceland for centuries with up to 60 fishing boats, almost as many huts and full of life. From the middle of the 16th century up to 400 persons lived here during the fishing season and this continued until the early 20th century.

The building is a rescue shelter from the middle of last celntury.

The landing place was in the narrow cove at the right. There was not enough room for all the boats so they were drawn up and then moved to the left out in Mariasand, named aftier the wholy maid. It was more difficult to land in that part of the cove, since the sand was very loose and hard to draw the boats up. On the left is Tröllakirkja (church of trolls, where Bárður the half troll and his men made their preys to the heathen gods as they came to land. In the cliffs is also a space named Glímustofa, where the fishermen used to wrestle when the weather was too bad for the fishing.
