The Cunard Line's RMS MAURETANIA and QUEEN MARY had sailed from New York to Sydney in March 1940 to carry troops overseas for war. In May 1940, both vessels left Sydney Harbour bound for the United Kingdom with 2,000 Australian troops.

His 72-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
