Buckeyes
The Ohio Buckeye tree not a common tree here in Wisconsin, so when I saw one, I had to gather some buckeyes that were on the ground. I had not seen one since I was a little kid on a family farm in Indiana. They produce a beautiful, smooth nut, full of rich, brown colors. Roughly the size of a large grape, they are called "buckeyes" because they resemble the eye of a male deer, or buck. The raw nuts, leaves, and bark of the tree are poisonous to humans and animals, but it is said to bring good luck if you carry one in your right pocket.
Here are the different stages of the nut emerging from the shell. The golfball-size shell is covered with small spikes, which can hurt the skin when handled. It only makes sense that such a beautiful nut comes with so much danger.
