Before heading up the mountains during our recent trip to the Dolomites we stayed one night at Villnöß (Funes in Italian) which is a small town in a valley just below the Odle mountain range. There are two iconic locations here, first the valley itself with the magnificent mountains in the background and then the small church of St. Johann which you can see here. We went up very early around 5 am to see if we could catch the alpenglow on the Odle mountains.

However, even though after a rainy day before the sun came out early it never really illuminated the Dolomites in the way we had envisioned. Still it was an almost sublime feeling standing before this magnificent landscapes with everything around still asleep. After having photographed the valley itself we proceeded to the church and just came right in time for the first light of the morning illuminating the fields around it.
