In the last couple of months I've been researching interesting locations in the Palatinate Forest which is the largest forest area in Germany and thankfully not that far away from Mannheim where I live. While Mannheim itself is an industrial city with relatively few opportunities for nature and landscape photography the Palatinate Forest is less than an hour's drive away and after some walks there I really enjoy the area. By now I think I have identified several interesting places which I will visit in the coming months.
One of them is the Wegelnburg. It's the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate and lies in a very remote and sparsely populated region right next to the border to France. The first time I've been there was during the day and even then I was impressed by the extremely wide view, covering miles and miles of forest and hills. The next time I was getting up very early in order to arrive there before sunrise. It was really hard to get there that early since you can't drive all the way to the castle and have to hike up the hill for several kilometers. However, when I finally arrived up there the view was absolutely magnificent. It was a little big foggier than anticipated but nevertheless a stunning sight. For me it's one of those places that have an almost magical aura to them.
