The Devil's Table

The devil's table near Hinterweidenthal/Palatinate is a well-known red sandstone rock and is the symbol of the Palatinate region. The big pine which grew on him fell victim in 1999 to a thunderstorm and was removed. Legend has it that the devil crossed one night the Palatinate Forest and he got big hunger. After he found no suitable resting place, he took without further ado two big sandstone rocks and put them on each other. When he was full, he simply left the rock table and disappeared. The people who saw the gigantic table the next day got great fear, because they supposed that here the devil was at work. Quite a courageous man boasted to want to take a meal with the devil together the next night. At midnight people heard a nightmarish shout and he was never again seen.
