Dungeness Lighthouse, Kent

This is the current lighthouse at Dungeness built in 1961, replacing the previous one (which was built in 1904).

This is the fifth lighthouse at Dungeness and was the first major new lighthouse to be built in Britain in fifty years. Dungeness is a unique area of the UK with a massive shingle beach, where the sea is constantly throwing up more shingle, causing the sea to recede. The old lighthouse is still standing but became ineffective as it moved further from the sea, but also once the Dungeness nuclear power station was built. This new lighthouse is constructed using precast concrete rings, with the black and white patter impregnated into the concrete.
