Leeloo And A Real Stitch

A FanTAStic Ruby Rhod and Leeloo from "The Fifth Element." Ach, I wish I'd gotten a separate portrait of Ruby, for obvious reasons.

Lots of 'Fifth Element" cosplay this year. If I were a grad student, or if I had grad students working for me, I'd set this as a research project: what shift in pop culture dynamics cause this kind of sudden explosion of cosplay? My hunch is "new remastered Blu-ray release coupled with ability to just mail order a signature costume piece." Whatever, these two are terrific.

Photo notes: I'm happy with my performance on this one. I knew that I wanted Ruby's costume elements to shine, and posed them accordingly.

This was one of the "Aha!" lessons from last year or the year before. How much of the costume do I need to fit into the frame so that the viewer will "get" the costume? Usually it's much less than you'd think. Everything I need here is from the waist up, if I get Ruby to turn so that I can shoot down into his rose collar, and get him to raise his staff into the frame. His "performance" was so good that it would have been a shame to minimize his facial expression by pulling back enough to get their pants in the shot. I mean, they were just pants.

I don't know what was going on between the camera and Leeloo's skin tone. Adjusting for Ruby's was easy, while Leeloo's took a bit of work.

I'm sure it was just one of those quirks. But it gave me an idea for a "House MD" spec script. House is dodging clinic duty by holing up in his office, looking at cosplay photos of women in revealing costumes. He frowns and goes back to one of the women in an alien bikini. There's something about her skin coloring her eyes that commands his curiosity. He diagnoses a rare lymphatic disorder, as his colleagues insist that it's just makeup, but he won't let it go...
