Matriarch elephant on her way up a dry river bed to join the herd. She is followed by her 2 calves - one is about 6 months old whilst the other 18 - 24 months old. It is normal for the young to stay with their mother for up to 3 years. The African elephant (Loxodonta) is a genus comprising two living elephant species, the African bush elephant and the smaller African forest elephant. Both are social herbivores with grey skin, but differ in the size and colour of their tusks and in the shape and size of their ears and skulls.
