Phillips and Norgal

1:72 Starguard miniatures (a man is 24-25 mm, or an inch, tall at this scale). I've used 20mm and 40mm bases (from Hasslefree miniatures). I prefer simple grass flock on round bases. I think I made a terrible mess of the 40mm base actually. I prefer to keep the bases flat and simple, because the focus should be on the miniature.

I'm quite happy with my current flock. I never liked static grass much, and painted sand felt dull and noisy. I bought some terrible sawdust flock once. Actually the stuff I have now is sawdust too, but it's quite fine, and has a warmer tone with some hue variation.

I use a brown for the base band, because black feels unnatural, and green feels like it's failing to be grass. Brown is still an earth color, so it fits in, and stands out just enough, I think.

I've misplaced my Milliput mushrooms (need to make some GreenStuff replacements), but I do have some tree/shrubbery foam stuff which I use sparingly. Also, I use an old toothbrush as an airbrush of sorts. It's all black-brown, which makes it a good grass material. I cut off a group of strands and push into GS. Then I paint the top green, with maybe some yellow touches.

As for the painting of the miniatures themselves... I don't have patience for anything more than "looks OK at a distance". I prefer to just use a base color, then do the panel lines / indents with a darker watered down color (not necessarily a wash), then I do a very thin and relatively bright highlight. Never a gradient building up towards the edge of the highlight.
