Midnight Hour

Last post from a wonderful visit. Taken just before midnight. Concerned by warnings of bad road conditions I decided to drive up the night before and sleep in my car, on what was rather a cold night. Mad? perhaps, although it wasn't too cold in my sleeping bag, and my thoughts went something like this: Is it bearable? Yes, am I affecting anyone else? No; will I come to harm? No.

I've been working recently in a voluntary capacity for a national neurological disease charity analysing surveys from sufferers and carers. The disease is 100% fatal and life expectancy is only a couple of years from diagnosis. It's not linked to life style, so staying fit and avoiding the common vices doesn't prevent it. Any of us could be diagnosed with it tomorrow and not be around next Christmas. It's really a wake-up call to get on with life and enjoy it to the full, because like many of the people whose moving testimonies I've studied, you really don't know what's around the corner.

It's Parkhouse Hill, by the way, with Orion's Belt (the three stars top right) pointing down towards Sirius, the brightest star in our night skies, to the left of the tree
