Helvellyn and Red Tarn

Back to our Whit week holiday. After a day recovering from our two first day walks we headed over to Glenridding for our first long walk. No. One son is ticking off the Wainwrights so we planned a long day on Helvellyn.

Weather forecast was a bit mixed with perhaps a bit of brightness, and we set off towards Red Tarn under a layer of cloud and drizzle. As we climbed the cloud lifted and broke, but over Helvellyn the cloud remained, blowing over the summit and into the Red Tarn cove. We stood and watched for half an hour as the clouds rolled rapidly from the west over the summit and dropped down towards us - I still can't work out why it was happening.

Striding Edge is on the left and Swirrel Edge on the right - Helvellyn is in the cloud (centre)
