This spectacular Byzantine chandelier was installed in Holy Ascension Orthodox Church (Mt. Pleasant, SC) in April, 2012. When I designed the church eight years earlier, I planned for this chandelier. It is modelled upon the 'Munich Choros', a medieval Byzantine fixture similar to the one still in place in the Decani Monastery, Kosovo. Thanks to a memorial gift, I have finally had the opportunity to build this choros. It is 18 feet in diameter, 22 feet tall, and made primarily of plasma-cut steel parts articulated with hinges. The candles on top are electrified, while the glass lamps hanging below are able to hold oil or candles. The bars include an inscription in ornamental lettering from the book of Revelation: "There shall be no night there, and they need no candle, neither light of the sun, for the Lord God giveth them light, and they shall reign for ever and ever."
