Canada Lynx / Lynx du Canada

[FR] Cette rencontre avec ce mâle s’est produite à la fin mars, en plein cœur de la très courte période de reproduction du Lynx du Canada. Sans trop se laisser distraire de ses activités de chasse, ce dernier semblait attendre le moment opportun pour s’accoupler avec une femelle se trouvant sur son territoire. La période d’ovulation ne durant que quelques jours, il la suivait patiemment entre différents sites de marquage du secteur, attendant qu’elle ne lui signifie enfin sa disponibilité. Utilisant la même stratégie pour tenter de capturer l’image de l’un ou l’autre des individus, c’est tout près de l’un de ces sites de marquage que j’ai entendu le cri distinctif d’un lièvre en détresse. J’ai pu facilement le localiser et ainsi observer brièvement le félin, tout juste avant qu’il ne me lance un regard et ne disparaisse avec sa proie.

 

[EN]This encounter with this male occurred at the end of March, right in the middle of the very short breeding period of the Canada Lynx. Without allowing himself to be too distracted from his hunting activities, the latter seemed to be waiting for the right moment to mate with a female on his territory. The ovulation period lasting only a few days, he patiently followed her between different marking sites in the area, waiting for her to finally showing of her availability. Using the same strategy to attempt to capture the image of either individual it is close to one of these marking site that I heard the distinctive cry of a hare in distress. . I was able to easily locate it and thus briefly observe the feline just before it glared at me and disappeared with its prey.
