A couple years ago, they stopped the powder puff event and let the girls and boys run into each other in junky old cars, the way God intended. (The first year they did it, we stayed for the final. I'm sure when little Emily's mom and dad gazed lovingly down at their newborn daughter they never envisioned a world where she'd grow up to win the demolition derby, but she did.)
I'd guess about 25% of the drivers are women, but you really can't tell because of the helmets. They read off the names and numbers, but I've always suspected the announcer's up there making them up.
