Milky Way and Perseid Shooting Star over Observatory on Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii

Spending one chilly night on the 10,023 feet or 3,055 m high Haleakala shield volcano on Maui offered some impressive sights of the observatory and the Milky Way. Timing was perfect, as new moon coincidented with the Perseids, a cosmic shower of shooting stars. Notice the unusual color shift in the shooting star from green to red during its journey through the atmosphere .
