City Hall è la sede della “Greater London Authority”, che comprende il sindaco di Londra e l’asseblea. Si trova sulla riva sud del Tamigi vicino al Tower Bridge ed è stato aperto nel luglio 2002. L'edificio ha una forma insolita e rotondeggiante, presumibilmente destinata a ridurre la sua superficie e quindi migliorare l'efficienza energetica, anche se gli eccessivi consumi di energia causati dall'uso esclusivo del vetro hanno vanificato i vantaggi della forma. E’ stato paragonato al casco di Darth Vader, ad un uovo deforme e ad un casco da motociclista. L'ex sindaco Ken Livingstone lo chiamava il "testicolo di vetro", mentre l'attuale sindaco, Boris Johnson, lo ha definito più educatamente come "la cipolla". Una passerella elicoidale di 500 metri, che ricorda quella del museo Guggenheim di New York, si arrampica per l'intera altezza dell'edificio.
City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority, which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It is located on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. It was opened in July 2002. The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although the excess energy consumption caused by the exclusive use of glass overwhelms the benefit of shape. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet, a misshapen egg and a motorcycle helmet. Former mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a "glass testicle", while the present mayor, Boris Johnson, has referred to it more politely as "The Onion". A 500-metre helical walkway, reminiscent of that in New York's Guggenheim Museum, ascends the full height of the building.
