Test every photographic "truth" yourself

Scandinavian viewers, please consider visiting my blog, if you like.

There's a lot of truths about photography to be found on the Internet. Some apply to you. Some don't. Test EVERYTHING you read for yourself. It usually takes five minutes, and gives one of the two following warm, comfy feeling afterwards:

1. "Actually, that was complete bull - and I don't need to change jack sh*t how I work. Great!"

2. "Right, NOW I understand... and know exactly how it actually applies to me. Great!"

Next time you read that you absolutely "have to shoot your particular lens at ƒ/this and that, or it won't be sharp" - try it out. Yourself. With your particular lens. Your particular camera. Your particular subject. Nobody else is going to do that for you. Sorry.

Strobist

Dual exposure at 1/2000th - straight out of camera. Inspiration for the method came from Joe McNally's two-faceportrait of Steve Martin, lightning style partially inspired by Peter Young's classic Fallon portrait.

SB-900 @ 1/128 power, hanging above subject from a lamp in a nano clamp. Most of the light goes in front of the subject to keep background black. Lumiquest Softbox III, 1/4 CTO. The D7000 is clamped to a chair on top of a black T-shirt. See setup shot in comments.
