Southwest Chief & Semaphores
Racing across the plains of Northeastern New Mexico, Amtrak's Southwest Chief prepares to knockdown a clear indication at the 706 semaphores.
These will be the last semaphores the Chief encounters as it travels another 1,146 miles to Chicago; a testament to how rare and historic these signals are.
Many have speculated how long these semaphores will remain in service. Rumor has it, new signal mounts are already being installed along this section of railroad. The last remaining mainline semaphores could soon be history.
