St Andrew's, Arthingworth

Arthingworth church stands in a commanding position at the heart of the village against a backdrop of trees, best viewed from the south from which it looks at its finest. The building has been rather heavily restored in the Victorian period but the exterior is still enjoyable, particularly the handsome late medieval west tower in Perpendicular style, with attractive twin-bell openings and ornamental detailing to the belfry stage.

Stepping inside it is clear that much of what we see in the light and pleasant interior is the result of extensive restoration and rebuilding in 1872. The nave has a single aisle on the south side and the arcade between them contains much original 12th or early 13th century material in its carved capitals and transitional arches. The chancel beyond however is an almost entirely Victorian creation, with its exuberant foliage carvings and colourful reredos. There is Victorian stained glass in just two windows here, both in the sanctuary. The south chapel however is medieval and contains a finely carved late 18th century memorial.

This was my 2nd visit to Arthingworth in 30 years and on both occasions I found it open, though as my latest coincided with September Ride & Stride I can't say for certain what the current arrangements regarding opening are.
