Millennium Window, Curdworth

Millennium window on the south side of the nave by Meg Lawrence, 2001.

The impressive church of St Nicholas in Curdworth consists of a fine late 15th century Perpendicular tower with a long aisles nave and chancel that look a century earlier, though incorporate much earlier work of the Norman period.

The tower follows a format found in several Warwickshire towers of the same date with small canopied windows on the south side to light the spiral staircase, and elaborate moldings around the west door and window.

Inside the church has some outstanding 12th century Romanesque survivals in the low chancel arch and some traces of wall painting. Best of all is the uniquely decorated font at the west end of the nave, early Norman (or late Saxon?) work in a primitive style.

Curdworth church is happily one of the rare but most welcome exceptions to the normal rule in north Warwickshire, being generally kept open and welcoming to visitors.
