Altar, Market Bosworth

Market Bosworth is an attractive town close to the site of a certain battlefield that played a rather pivotal role in English history. Its church of St Peter is a handsome building set back in its own green enclave in the heart of the town with a tapering tower and spire to assert its presence. At first glance when approaching the church from the south the proportions make quite an impression, the stately steeple being so high as to make the church appear as tall as it is long.

Most of the present building is of 14th century date but much modified and added to in the following century (the nave clerestorey for example) and as usual much restored in the Victorian period. It is nonetheless a rather imposing building of great dignity. The nave appears fairly short for its height while the chancel by contrast is long and low. The nave is flanked by aisles on each side with main entry by the south porch.

Inside it is an impressive space, though it takes a moment to adjust to the lower lighting, the walls being stone-lined throughout which always accentuates a little gloom. The impression is that of a 15th century town church with its high arcades and clerestorey and a fair amount of Victorian glass, some of it good, some of it less so (the mainly ornamental glazing in the high windows only serves to diminish the light). There are a couple of good windows by Kempe, including that at the east end of the chancel, and some interesting memorials in this part of the church. The oldest feature however is the font at the west end, its bowl decorated with shields (some of which retain colour) is 14th century, though the columns supporting it may date from the previous century.

Market Bosworth church is well worth a visit and happily normally kept open and welcoming during the day (a bit of a rarity in this diocese!) and is clearly well loved by the community.
