Shame and commitment

Lewis, writing about shame as the key to much contemporary psychopathologies and interpersonal conflicts, suggested that ultimately the only adequate response to shame and a sense of worthlessness may not be a psychiatric but an ethical one.

He concludes:

"the way out is commitment. We can never be sure that any commitment is correct, but the lack of security does not matter. Commitment, by its nature, frees us from ourselves and (...) moves us from the mirror trap of the self absorbed with the self to the freedom of a community of shared values"
