Cooper's Hawk
A friend of mine at University of Memphis had just finished photographing a Great Blue Heron when this hawk landed on some power lines. It stayed for a little while as we got off some shots from the car window in the Chakchiuma Swamp near Grenada, Mississippi.
The Chakchiuma ('crawfish') were a Native American tribe in the upper Yazoo River region or what is now Mississippi. They were a prevalent tribe during DeSoto's expedition around 1540 and lived in a walled town. However, in approximately 1739, this tribe was engaged in hostile uprisings against the Chickasaw, which led to their end as an independent tribe. They were incorporated into the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes, according to various sources.
