Bernauer Strasse, Berlin, 27 August 1962

The houses form part of the Berlin Wall. They are in East Berlin, with the pavement in the West. Note that in the bricking-up, in most cases one brick has been omitted so that border guards can look out, and possibly shoot at fleeing refugees.

This and many other of my photographs are featured in my book "Berlin in the Cold War, 1959-1966" (Allan Hailstone, Amberley Publishing, October 2017), together with the story of my experiences of photographing divided Berlin in those years.
