Nilgiri Blue Robin
This blue robin, endemic to India's Western Ghats, is very similar in appearance to the White-bellied Blue Robin which occurs in the same mountain range. In fact they were, until recently, a single species known as the Rufous-bellied Shortwing. Like its close relative, it is a shy, skulking species which lives in the undergrowth of sheltered woods or sholas. Sadly, it also shares the same endangered conservation status as the other blue robin. This bird was photographed, after a couple of hours of intensive searching, on the outskirts of the hill station city of Ooty.
