beauty and the bland

I've become genuinely suspicious about the "curse of the unrenovated", as every last lovely un-tarted-up old terrace I've photographed lately has, practically the next time I've passed by, come under the gun of Renovation Fever. Here's the latest.

Napoleon once allegedly disparaged the English as "a nation of shopkeepers". Well, I'm starting to feel rather like Australia has become a "nation of home renovators". It's dismaying to see how much human/emotional/financial capital is poured into an already savagely inflated housing market. Were all the passions that are now dedicated to installing "Balinese style" bathrooms and "European gas kitchens" put into productive enterprises outside the domestic sphere, remarkable things might be accomplished. Feh.
