Growing Inside

Plants and mosses on (and inside of) the trunk of a fallen tree. From a hike in Shingletown Gap this afternoon.

While hiking I enjoy finding small things to photograph, and the forests in this area reward attention to detail. Not all forests are equally good for this: I've been in some that offer only dead leaves and thorny bushes at ground level. Here, the moist climate and the clean air support tiny ecosystems like the one in this picture.

ISO 4000, 100mm, f/16, 1/90s, taken with my macro lens.
