Giant Leopard Moth
Pittsburgh, PA.
I was delighted that an elder of this species was willing to sit for a photo shoot with me this evening. One of the adjacent photos on my page shows its full body. Here is a close-up of its wing.
It's always amazed me how many species of large, vividly-patterned moths endure in spite of their short lifespans and how rarely I see them. "Because pheromones" is invariably the answer when I bring this up: moths emit them to attract mates and breed. Still, how many giant leopard moths would you expect to live in an average square mile, and how often would you expect to find them? They must be around, but we don't see them.
