Ben Lawers Dam

Lochan na Lairige, Scotland.

Hydro dams are a major source of electricity in Scotland, and when I traveled in the Highlands I saw several dams like this one. Something about them seemed eerie and secretive to me, which I tried to convey with this picture. Scotland's barren, hilly countryside expresses emptiness like few other places I've been, and these dams are enormous human artifacts surrounded by the emptiness. I never saw anyone working on them, or any movement; they just stood quietly, holding the lochs in place.
