Stone and Moon

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, Scotland.

On a cold, clear winter day I visited the northeast Scottish town of Stonehaven. I spent two hours walking around Dunnottar Castle, which lay in ruins on a stunning spit of land surrounded on three sides by ocean. Dunnottar may have been my favorite Scottish castle in ruins, for its diverse photo opportunities, its setting, and its sheer size: I encountered other visitors who were having trouble finding the exit.

While planning the trip, I made a note of when the moon would rise and from which direction. I had suddenly remembered to look for it not long before taking this picture.
