Once a Home

Isle of Raasay, Scotland.

How many buildings or residents make a place worthy of a name? If people abandon a village but it still appears on maps, what exactly has it become? I pondered these questions as I drove and walked across this island in the Inner Hebrides that was hit hard by the Highland Clearances. I took the this picture in Brochel, which had only one inhabited building left. The rest crumbled long ago, leaving rectangles of stones like this one.
