The Cubby Hole Cafe, 10713 Main St., Richmond, sustained about $150,000 in damage after a fire Saturday night, according to a news release from the Richmond Township Fire Protection District.
About 9 p.m., Richmond firefighters were dispatched to the restaurant after reports of heavy flames and smoke coming from the building, according to the release.
The fire, which mainly was confined to the kitchen, was extinguished in about a half-hour.
Owner Tim Snopek said there might be some things at the front of the restaurant that could be cleaned and salvaged, but the back area was too damaged.
The scene was processed by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, and a cause has yet to be determined, according to the release. Fire inspectors left the scene about 3 a.m., Snopek said.
Snopek said he hopes to lease space at a nearby restaurant that will allow him to keep his 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. business hours rather than waiting to open a new restaurant.
“[Our employees] need to get back and working,” Snopek said.
According to social media posts on the cafe’s Facebook page, the Cubby Hole has operated in Richmond for 33 years.
Snopek said the cafe used to be open during the evenings, but after business slowed a few years ago, daily hours became 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
He said he is unsure how long cleanup efforts will take and does not know whether the building will need to be razed.
First responders from Spring Grove, Wonder Lake, Hebron-Alden-Greenwood, Crystal Lake, Antioch, Fox Lake, Nunda Rural, Woodstock, Cary, Wauconda and Marengo, as well as Bloomfield-Genoa City and Randall Township in Wisconsin, assisted with the fire.
