Okunoin cemetery (Mount Koya, Japan 2015)
Okunoin is Japan's largest cemetery. The sense of place is quite overwhelming. As I followed the path through the sacred forest, I couldn't help but feel peace and tranquillity while observing the more than 200,000 stone stupas of all shapes and sizes scattered all around, along with a few Jizō statues and the occasional war memorial. A large number of historical characters are also buried here, among them the great general Oda Nobunaga.
