Actually Shangri-La is a mystic city which was described in a famous roman talking about a mysterious tibetan area. Thus Zhongdian is the city which is the most likely to correspond to Shangri-La Description thus it is commonly called Shangri-La despite others city claims to be the original Shangri-La. This city has a very cute old tibetan style neighborhoods but it got unfortunately on fire some months after my journey. I know that this world trip would have given me the opportunity to see some nice places and traditions which will disappear one day but I am sad to observe that some are disappearing before the end of my tour. But I hope Chinese could rebuild this place.
I cycled on the road to some villages around with big tibetan houses and was welcomed by this old woman who gave me opportunity to taste the tsampa, the famous cereal which compose most of tibetan meals. She was speaking a very basic chemise so communication was not easy since learning tibetan is given difficult by the multiplicity of different dialects.
