Wild Jaguarundi in the Bolivian Amazon

Seen in Madidi National Park, in the Bolivian Amazon.

This was one of the most thrilling moments of our trip- we saw this jaguarundi swimming and then running through the shallows of the Tuichi River. At first our guides thought that it was a wet Ocelot but once it got out of the water we were able to more accurately identify it. It was a very brief sighting- the animal sprinted straight into the jungle and I only got this one shot, but it was an incredibly thrilling sighting.

Jaguarundi exist all through the Americas (as far north as the American Southwest), but are very rare and difficult to see in this part of the Amazon. It was the first time anyone on the boat (including the four guides who have lived their whole lives in the Bolivian Amazon) had ever seen one of these in the wild.
