Statue of Pope John Paul II, Fatima, Portugal

Pope John Paul II had a special relationship with the Marian site of Fatima. He credited Our Lady of Fatima with saving his life during an assassination attempt in May 1981 since it happened on the 64th anniversary of the Virgin Mary's first apparition in the town. He afterwards made three pilgrimages to Fatima, in 1982, 1991 and 2000. This larger-than-life bronze statue honors his relationship with Fatima in the main sanctuary square. It was sculpted by Polish artist Czeslaw Dzwigaj. The great High Cross of Fatima stands behind it.
