The Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon
The Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 16th century to celebrate the Portuguese achievements in sea exploration. It originally housed a community of Hieronimite monks (hence the Portuguese name Jeronimos) who continually prayed for the health of Portuguese sailors and explorers abroad. This photo shows the eastern part of the massive monastery complex housing the church.
