'Telephone Booths' by Richard Estes, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid, Spain

Painted in 1967. Richard Estes (born 1932) specializes in Photorealist Painting, also called hyper-realism. Much of his work depicts American cities. This painting, slightly cropped at the sides, shows telephone booths in 1960s New York City, filled with anonymous people. It is a huge work, 175 x 122cms, and almost hypnotic when seen in real life.
