Queen Margrethe I (1353-1412) was the first woman to rule a major European nation when she took the reins of Denmark in 1387, and through her skills she managed to unite all three Scandinavian kingdoms under one crown in a royal federation called the Kalmar Union, which lasted for 100 years after her death. Her remains lie buried in the chancel of Roskilde Cathedral.
