Young Egyptians fleeing to Europe
13 October 2014. Shobra Sandy: Mahmud Abdul, 17 years old, watches television in his friend Mohamed Hassan's house, in Shobra Sandy, a small village in an area where many young boys regularly attempt to scape to Europe by boats. Mahmud and Mohamed tried to flee together to Italy in December 2013, but the boat that departed from Alexandria sank near the Greek coast and was rescued by the Red Cross. They were repatriated later back home by the authorities. Mahmud is still dreaming to travel to Europe, but he is hesitant due to the scaring experience he suffered in that boat. For the time being, he will remain in the village, helping his family in the farm.
